CCBC BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The CCBC Board of Directors is a key resource for both the CCBC and its members. The directors’ cumulative corporate experience in China and their personal and business networks among China and Canada’s most senior government and business leaders is unparalleled. They speak with insight and authority on Canada-China business, trade and investment issues and their voices are heard. At the November 1, 2023, AGM Business Meeting, two new directors were elected to the CCBC board for 2023-2024: Karen Cvornyek of Karen Cvornyek Architect Inc., and Chengyi WEI of CND Canada Food Group Ltd. CCBC President Graham Shantz also thanked retiring directors Connie Mak, Carrie Solmundson, and Peter Wilkinson for their service and contribution to the Council.

 

On March 25, 2024, the board also elected Jack Yu, Partner and Co-Leader of Fasken’s China Practice Group, as a director.

Mr. Desmarais has been Senior Vice-President of Power Corporation since 2017. Mr. Desmarais is the driving force behind the Power Sustainable vision as a global, sustainability-led alternative asset manager.

 

He chairs the Canada China Business Council (CCBC) and also sits on the boards of directors of Canada Life, IG Wealth Management, Mackenzie and Lumenpulse.

 

He is actively engaged in the community as member of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research.

 

Mr. Desmarais holds a Bachelor of Civil Law from the University of Ottawa, a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Political Science from McGill University, and has been a Québec Bar member since 2009.

Graham Shantz*

 

 

 

 

Biography

Graham served for over 25 years in Canada’s public service providing advice to Canadian governments, mainly on management of Canada’s relations with Asia. He has lived and worked for over 12 years in Asia, half of that in China. In Ottawa, Graham has worked in senior management positions in Global Affairs Canada, the Department of Finance and the Privy Council Office. In 2000-2001 he served as Canada’s lead negotiator for Foreign Investment Protection Agreements (FIPAs) and in 1996-1997 served as deputy chief negotiator for the Canadian team during China’s WTO accession talks. Over the past decades, Graham has been involved in numerous major bilateral visits between Canadian and Chinese leaders.

 

Graham has served on the Board of Directors of the Asia Pacific Foundation (2013-2016) and on the Board of Directors of the Centre for International Governance Innovation (2006-2009). He served as Canada’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain (2009-2012) and ended his career in the public service in senior management positions in Global Affairs Canada’s Asia Branch.

 

A Mandarin speaker, Graham pursued his interest in China while studying economics at Goshen College in Indiana. He holds an M.A. in International Affairs from Carleton University’s Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. He also pursued language and economics studies in China, including at Beijing University and Xiamen University, under the Canada-China Scholars’ Exchange Program.

Biography

The Honourable Scott Brison joined BMO as Vice-Chair, Investment & Corporate Banking in 2019. As an elected Member of Parliament, Mr. Brison served the constituency of Kings-Hants (Nova Scotia) who elected him to Canada’s House of Commons seven consecutive times over 21 years. During that time, he served in government for seven years holding key roles, most recently as President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Digital Government from 2015 to 2019, Minister of Public Works and Government Services from 2004 to 2006, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister with special emphasis on Canada-U.S. relations from 2003 to 2004.

 

In June 2020, Mr. Brison became Dalhousie University’s eighth chancellor.

 

Mr. Brison is a member of the Trilateral Commission and was named by the World Economic Forum of Davos, Switzerland, as one of its “Young Global Leaders.” In August 2010, he was awarded the Order of San Carlos by Colombian President Álvaro Uribe in recognition of his contributions to the Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement.

 

Mr. Brison has formerly served as a board member for both Universal Rail Systems and the MacDonald Stewart Foundation. He also previously served as Chairman of SeaFort Capital Inc. Presently, he holds active positions on the boards of the Canada China Business Council (CCBC), Canadian Jewish Political Affairs Committee (CJPAC), the advisory board of the Canadian American Business Council (CABC), Power Sustainable and High Liner Foods Inc.

 

Mr. Brison earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Dalhousie University. He has completed the Global Leadership and Public Policy for the 21st Century Executive Education Program at the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government.

Biography

Martin Cauchon has had a distinguished career. First elected as a Member of Parliament in October 1993, he has held many positions in the Government of Canada. He has served as Secretary of State (Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec), Minister of National Revenue, and Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada. In 2013, he was an official candidate in the leadership race of the Liberal Party of Canada. From 2015 to 2019, he was also a shareholder and Executive Chairman of Groupe Capitales Médias, which gave him a better understanding of the challenges facing the print media in a digital world.

 

Mr. Cauchon’s unparalleled experience in government and the private sector has given him a deep understanding of a wide range of issues. As counsel at DS Lawyers Canada, he advises companies on the various issues facing the knowledge economy and the globalization of markets, taking into account geopolitical factors. Mr. Cauchon also facilitates the creation of partnerships at the provincial, national, and international levels.

 

Having established relationships with several counterparts in China, Martin Cauchon has acquired a good knowledge of that market, which allows him to intervene in projects that are related to the Canada-China relationship.

 

After obtaining a law degree from the University of Ottawa, Mr. Cauchon became a member of the Quebec Bar in 1985 and completed a master degree in International Business Law in 1991, at the University of Exeter, in England. He was the 2004 recipient of the Equality Forum’s International Role Model Award. In 2015, he received the honorary distinction of “Advocatus emeritus” and “Le Mérite” from the Quebec Bar. He is also Vice Chair, Board of Directors of the Canada China Business Council and Chair of its Quebec Chapter Advisory Council. He also serves on the board of directors of several companies.

Biography

Dr. Fung is the co-founder, Board Chair and CEO of the ACDEG Group of companies, a global technology integrator. Over the past 34 years, he has founded, co-founded or restructured over 25 business ventures/corporations in agri-food, manufacturing, wholesale distribution and clean technologies in North America, Europe and Asia. Dr. Fung was a venture advisor of Cycle Capital Management Inc., one of the largest clean technology venture capital funds in Canada.

 

Dr. Fung is the co-inventor of 35 issued or allowed patents with 32 patent applications pending on a variety of chemical technologies including a highly disruptive discovery on the disproportionate responses of the physicochemical properties of liquids to minute external stimuli.

 

Besides the ACDEG Group of companies, his board experience includes Chair of the Chemical Institute of Canada, Co-chair of the Members of the Canada Foundation for Innovation, National Board Chair of Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters Association, Chair of China Committee of International Science & Technology Partnership Canada, Vice-chair of the national boards of Canada China Business Council, the Canadian Standards Association Group and the Management Board of National Zero Waste Council of Canada. He was the Chancellor and a member of the Board of Governors and the Senate of Capilano University of British Columbia, the President of the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering, a member of the Steering Committee of the Metro Vancouver Regional Prosperity Initiative, a Senior Fellow of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada and a member of the Advisory Board of the McGill School of Religious Studies.

 

He was awarded the Canadian Asian of the Year (Business and Public Service), 2009 by Asia Network Canada, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, 2012 by the Governor General of Canada, the honorary Doctor of Law degree by Capilano University (BC) in 2014, the honorary Doctor of Science degree by Concordia University (Quebec) in 2020 and the Award of Merit by the McGill Alumni Association in 2022.

Biography

Sarah joined the CCBC in 2007 and has since revitalized CCBC’s role as Canada’s premier bilateral trade and investment organization. Sarah has re-centered the Council’s activities around providing business services, catalyzing business growth and activity, and advocating for stronger Sino-Canadian bilateral trade and investment. This has resulted in extensive public outreach activities, internal infrastructure improvements, the launch of new programs such as the Business Incubation Centre, and thriving member relations.

 

Prior to joining CCBC, Sarah worked for 11 years in marketing, product development, and management with a major multinational corporation, where she had multiple assignments involving China. Sarah managed worldwide product businesses that marketed to China and used China-based sources of supply. She was also involved in several projects requiring cooperation with the Chinese government. Sarah has led both established and start-up businesses within the context of a global corporation and has broad emerging market business experience, and has been involved in the Greater China region since the late 1980’s when she lived and worked in Taiwan. There, she was the first non-Chinese employee of a local high-tech start-up firm, where she gained a deep understanding of Chinese business practices.

 

A fluent Mandarin speaker, Sarah’s interest in China began at the University of Wisconsin, where she studied Chinese, marketing, and international business. She holds an MBA in finance and operations from the Simon School of Business at the University of Rochester. She frequently speaks on China issues, including marketing, trade, investment, and Canada-China relations.

Paul Blom
Executive Director
British Columbia First Nations Energy and Mining Council

Biography

Paul Blom is a Registered Professional Forester (Ret.) and Registered Professional Biologist. His studies include Mandarin at the Taiwan National Normal University and his 5-year tenure in Asia involves service at the Zhejiang Forest and Agriculture University in Zhejiang and with the British Columbia Trade Office in Taiwan.

 

Mr. Blom coordinated the development of the following province-wide First Nations plans and strategies, which form the basis of the mandate for the First Nations Energy and Mining Council, a policy organization advocating for the 203 First Nations communities in BC:

– First Nations China Strategy: Innovative Partnerships
– BC First Nations Energy Action Plan
– BC First Nations Mineral Exploration and Mining Action Plan

 

Mr. Blom has been involved in numerous indigenous, provincial and federal missions to China to develop trade opportunities and cultural understandings for First Nations; including the coordination of the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations mission to China to raise a totem pole in Beichuan to commemorate the victims of the Wenchuan earthquake.

Sam Boutziouvis*

Biography

Sam Boutziouvis was appointed Vice-President, Government Relations and Multilateral Development Institutions for AtkinsRéalis (formerly SNC-Lavalin Group Inc.) in December, 2012. He reports to Michael Novak, Executive Vice-President, Global Government, Aboriginal and Economic Affairs.

 

In his position based out of Ottawa, Sam is responsible for senior AtkinsRéalis relationship management with the Government of Canada. He will work with AtkinsRéalis senior management and with AtkinsRéalis product business units to help secure essential political, diplomatic, public service and crown agency (EDC, CCC) support for the company’s domestic and export market expansion. He represents the corporation by maintaining ongoing relationships with multilateral development institutions and national and international industry associations.

 

Sam’s 20-plus years of experience with the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (a CEO-based public policy advocacy organization) will assist in these tasks. Over his career with the Council, Sam held positions of increasing breadth and responsibility and was Vice-President, Policy, with a focus on international and fiscal issues for several years. Prior to that, he was a senior analyst with the Gas Exports Division at the then-called Department of Energy, Mines and Resources with the Government of Canada.

 

Sam is a graduate from Carleton University (MA in Public Administration), University of Ottawa (undergraduate degrees in Economics and Biochemistry) and the University of Western Ontario (Executive Program).

Stephen Bowman

Biography

Stephen Bowman is a partner in the tax practice at Bennett Jones LLP and serves as Vice Chair and Managing Partner, People and Talent of the firm. He has led the firm’s China and Asia initiatives. Stephen served as managing partner of the firm’s Toronto office for more than 13 years.

 

Stephen has written and spoken on domestic and international tax planning matters and is a contributing author to Tax Policy in Canada, ed. by Mintz, McKenzie and Kerr. He is a past president of the Canadian Branch of the International Fiscal Association.

 

Stephen is Co-Chair of the International Bar Association’s Future of Legal Services Commission, past Chair of the IBA’s Law Firm Management Committee and a past member of the Council of the Section on Public and Professional Interest. He is the Chair of the Board of Directors of Greenwood College School and a member of the Board of Directors of the Canada China Business Council. He is also immediate past Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Royal Ontario Museum and currently serves as a director and Vice Chair of the Royal Ontario Museum Foundation.

Gwen Burrows*

Biography

Gwen Burrows is Assistant Vice-President, International Engagement & Impact at the University of Toronto (U of T). She collaborates with colleagues across the university and internationally to advance U of T’s global excellence and impact in research, its translation, and in teaching and learning. She has an integral role in leading and executing the university’s international strategy across multiple dimensions, with a particular focus on region-specific engagement strategies and the development of partnerships to maximize global impact and advance U of T’s role and reputation as one of the world’s top universities.

 

Before being appointed the inaugural Assistant Vice-President, International Engagement and Impact in June 2022, Ms. Burrows served as Executive Director, International, with responsibility for developing and leading a team on the implementation of U of T’s first international strategic plan. She has led the development of key international partnerships in a number of regions around the world. In particular, she played a leadership role in the development of the recently launched Health Collaborative Network with eight universities in Africa.

 

Before joining the University of Toronto, Ms. Burrows served in various leadership roles at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). From 2014-17, she was the Executive Director, Communications, Public Affairs and Advocacy at SickKids. From 2006-2013, she was Director of Strategic Projects at the SickKids Research Institute. In that role, Ms. Burrows was part of a small team that led a successful $227-million Canada Foundation for Innovation grant proposal and its implementation to support the vision guiding the development of the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning.

 

Ms. Burrows began her career at SickKids in 1997 in the Foundation’s National Grants Program, a Canada-wide funding program for child health research. There she held the role of Director, National Grants Program, for five years, where she led a peer-reviewed granting program which supported child health researchers across the country.  

 

Ms. Burrows has been an active volunteer in the charitable sector, including as President for the Couchiching Institute on Public Affairs from 2009-2011. She holds a Master’s in Philosophy from Johns Hopkins and a BA from McGill University.

Karen Cvornyek, B. Arch., B.E.S., OAA, FRAIC

Biography

In addition to realizing numerous commercial and institutional projects in Canada, Karen Cvornyek has practiced architecture throughout Asia, as well as the U.S., England, Japan, Italy, Germany and the United Arab Emirates. Her strengths include design and project management; setting the project design concept; and directing architectural, consultant and client teams from development to the realization of the project.

 

After practicing domestically and internationally for 15 years, Ms. Cvornyek joined B+H Architects as a Partner in 2002 and led the firm’s practice in Asia from 2003-2023, adding a new Montreal Studio to the practice in 2020. In 2008, she was appointed President, Asia, overseeing B+H’s operations in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Vietnam with their professional staff of more than 280 architects, interior designers, landscape architects and urban planners. Furthermore, she was elected to the B+H Management Committee from 2005 to 2023.

 

Ms. Cvornyek has an extensive educational background, having earned a Bachelor of Environmental Studies and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Waterloo. Her professional qualifications encompass memberships in the Ontario Association of Architects (O.A.A.), Ordre des Architectes du Quebec (O.A.Q.), and she holds the distinction of being a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

 

Ms. Cvornyek has been involved in various notable endeavours and has received numerous accolades. In 1991, she was recognized with the Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Embassy Redevelopment Project in Tokyo by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Canada, and in 2014, she received the Governor General’s Medal for advancing ties between Canada and China. She honoured as the Executive of the Year in Architecture by Singapore Business Review in 2017, and in 2018, she served as the Chair of the Canada-ASEAN Business Council’s Women’s Leadership Forum in Singapore. Most recently she served as the International Women’s Forum, Toronto Chapter, in 2022.

 

Ms. Cvornyek’s leadership expertise extends to architectural education. She has taught at esteemed institutions such as the University of Waterloo, School of Architecture in Waterloo and Rome; the Pratt Institute’s School of Architecture, and has been a Guest Critic at the University of Toronto, University of Waterloo, and Carleton University’s School of Architecture.

Laura Hewitt
VP & Head, Global Government Affairs & Public Policy

Biography

Ms. Laura Hewitt is the Vice-President and Head of Global Government Affairs and Public Policy at Sun Life. Ms. Hewitt is a seasoned public affairs professional with experience in the public, private and non-profit sectors. In her current role, she is responsible for Sun Life’s government affairs activities globally and the organization’s engagement on public policy and geopolitical analysis.

 

Ms. Hewitt joined Sun Life in 2018 as the Assistant Vice-President (AVP) of Government and Regulatory Affairs for Sun Life Canada. In 2019, she also took on an acting role with added accountability for sustainability, including the implementation of the organization’s sustainability strategy and reporting. Ms. Hewitt also held the role of AVP of Pharmaceutical Benefits and Innovation at Sun Life. In this position she led a team of pharmacists and product experts to evolve drug benefit plans and help employers navigate the changing health benefits landscape in Canada.

 

Prior to joining Sun Life, Ms. Hewitt worked in government relations, corporate outreach and strategy at Export Development Canada, a federal crown corporation responsible for supporting Canada’s exporters. She has also held positions with the Government of Ontario and the Government of Canada, in a variety of subject matter areas, including economic development, tourism and national defence.

 

Ms. Hewitt is currently a Board Member with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the Canada China Business Council. She holds a Master’s degree from Ryerson University’s Public Policy and Administration program and a Bachelor’s of Public Affairs and Policy Management from Carleton University.

Vivi Hou
President and CEO

Biography

Ms. Vivi Hou is the President and CEO of Power Pacific, Power Corp.’s Greater China headquarters. She holds various key roles on several boards, including Chairwoman of the Supervisory Board of China Asset Management, member of the Board of Directors at the Canada China Business Council, and member of the Board of Directors of the Education Development Foundation at Duke Kunshan University. Ms. Hou has devoted significant time and effort to nurturing Canada-China business relations.

 

Ms. Hou’s career in financial services have spanned two decades across the Pacific. She was Head of Private Investment and Business Development at CSOP Asset Management and later served as Chief Business Development Officer & Head of China Strategy at Harvest Global Investments. Before moving to Hong Kong, Ms. Hou began her career as an equity investment analyst at Investors Group Investment Management in Canada. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Alberta.

 

Power Corporation of Canada (Power Corp.), a Fortune 500 company, is a leading global financial conglomerate. Since 1978, Power Corp.’s investments in the greater China region have involved holding investments in China Asset Management, one of China’s largest asset managers, and direct investments in multiple listed A/H-shares and private projects.

Constantine Karayannopoulos, BASc, MASc, P.Eng.

Biography

Constantine Karayannopoulos, a Professional Engineer, is President and CEO of Neo Performance Materials Inc. (“NEO”), a Canadian public company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX:NEO). He was appointed to this position in July 2020, after serving as NEO’s Chairman since September 2016. As one of the longest serving executives in the rare earth industry, he has worked with multiple governments in Europe, North America and Asia to converge public policy and industrial economics, over the past three decades.

 

Constantine began the Rare Earth phase of his career in 1994, under the leadership of Peter V. Gundy, who founded Advanced Material Resources Limited (“AMR”) in Toronto the prior year. AMR was the first foreign company allowed into China’s Rare Earth industry with two majority owned operating joint ventures. Constantine moved from Business Development Manager to North American Sales Manager, Global Sales Manager/Chairman of the JVs, VP/General Manager of AMR’s Rare Earth Business Unit and eventually to Chief Operating Officer responsible for both AMR’s divisions, Rare Earths and Magnetic Materials. In 2005, following AMR’s acquisition of Magnequench, Constantine became CEO of the combined company, being renamed to Neo Material Technologies Inc. (“Neo”). Neo established itself as a unique global rare earth specialty value-added materials company and, with strong cash flow and a pristine balance sheet, grew to 11 plants and 1,500 employees globally. In June 2012, Neo was acquired by Molycorp (NYSE-MCP) for Cdn$1.3 billion. Constantine joined the Board of Molycorp in July 2012 as Vice-Chairman. He became interim CEO of Molycorp in December 2012 and Chairman in December 2013. In September 2016, select strategic assets of Molycorp emerged as the distinct business entity Neo Performance Materials, of which Constantine was first appointed Chairman and now serves as CEO. He is also a Director of NEO and serves on the Health, Environment, Safety and Sustainability (HESS) Committee.

 

Constantine was also co-founder and non-executive Chairman of the Board of Neo Lithium Corp., from 2016 until January 2022.

 

Constantine is a member of the Advisory Board at the University of Toronto’s Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry, a Director of the Canada China Business Council and a director on the Board of Lithium Royalties Corp., a fund investing in battery materials royalties and streams.

 

He holds Bachelor and Master of Applied Science degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto.

 

Constantine directs most of his charitable work towards education, one of his passions. He is married with three sons and resides in Toronto, Canada.

Biography

Joyce brings a unique perspective to her practice, skillfully uniting Canadian companies seeking Chinese investors with Chinese companies looking to expand into North America. She also regularly advises corporate executives in the financial sector about taking advantage of opportunities and navigating risk.

 

Born and raised in Hong Kong and with over 20 years experience working in the North American marketplace, Joyce has both the cultural and business skills necessary to view potential deals from each party’s perspective. Her communication skills – she speaks English, Mandarin and Cantonese fluently – smoothly guide Asian companies into Canada, including joint ventures in mining and other natural resources sectors; and, the technology, life science and real estates industries.

Stuart Mercier is a Managing Partner, Asia Pacific, responsible for expanding Brookfield’s Real Estate activities and partnerships across Asia Pacific and the Middle East and is the Country Head for Singapore. He has held several roles across the organization including as the inaugural Head of Asia where he lead the establishment of Brookfield’s Chinese, Korean and Japanese real estate businesses.

 

Prior to joining Brookfield in 2012, Mr. Mercier held various investment roles within a boutique Asia real estate investment and advisory firm. He also held several positions at Oxford Properties, the global real estate platform of the OMERS pension fund.

As Vice-President, Indo-Pacific, his mandate is at the core of EDC’s long-term vision – building EDC’s and Canada’s trade business in the Indo-Pacific region. From expanding EDC’s physical presence in the region to building EDC’s only independent branch outside of Canada, his responsibilities include creating new export and investment opportunities for Canadian companies. Since joining EDC in 2020, George has held senior leadership positions, including most recently Vice-President, Global Business Development. The Honourable James Moore is a Senior Business Advisor at the multinational law firm Dentons, a Public Policy Advisor at the global firm Edelman and sits on a number of corporate boards with extensive experience in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.  He is a regular public affairs contributor on CBC, CTV, Global National and BNN Bloomberg. 

 

Previously, he served as Canada’s Minister of Industry, Minister of Canadian Heritage & Official Languages and Secretary of State for the Asia Pacific Gateway and Minister for the 2010 Olympics over a 5-term, 15-year career as a Member of Parliament. He was the senior regional minister for the province of British Columbia and the is the youngest cabinet minister and Member of Parliament in B.C.’s history.

Pierre Seïn Pyun

Pierre Seïn Pyun was appointed Vice President, Government and Industry Affairs in October 2011. As such, he is responsible for government affairs for Bombardier in Canada and internationally. His team also manages industrial affairs for the company.

 

A lawyer by training, Mr. Pyun has significant background in international trade, having served with the Canadian federal government from 1998 to 2011. Prior to joining Bombardier, Mr. Pyun managed sector practices and developed and implemented global commercial strategies for the Canadian government in Ottawa. Furthermore, he worked at Canadian diplomatic posts in China from 2001-2009, including as a Senior Trade Commissioner at the Canadian Embassy in Beijing.

 

Mr. Pyun holds degrees in civil law and common law from McGill University and completed a Certificate in International Commerce at the University of Montreal. He is fluent in English, French, Mandarin and Korean.

James Rausch

James Rausch is Global Head of Banks, Brokers & Exchanges at RBC Investor & Treasury Services and is also a member of the Investor & Treasury Services Operating Committee. He is based in Toronto.

 

As Global Head of Banks, Brokers & Exchanges, James has end-to-end responsibility for the sales, service and product delivery of Canadian dollar services to our financial institution partners globally. James also leads our Graduate Rotational Program in Canada, and is heavily involved in mentoring new and high potential employees.

 

James joined RBC in 2014 and is a seasoned leader with over 25 years of experience in financial markets, including 12 years at Powerex and previously at Infoware Software, the Toronto Stock Exchange and Toronto Dominion Bank. His broad business experience includes transaction banking, client coverage, risk management, commodities trading and corporate finance.

 

James became a CFA charterholder in 1999 and holds an MBA from the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Science from the same institution. He recently completed a certificate in the Foundations of Applied Mindfulness Meditation, is a certified facilitator of the Mindfulness Without Borders program and is a Professional Coach pursuing his Associate Certified Coach (ACC) accreditation. David Rheault

David Rheault is Vice President of Government and Community Relations at Air Canada. A lawyer by training, he joined Air Canada in 2007 as counsel, litigation.

 

Mr. Rheault represented Air Canada before courts and administrative tribunals and advised the company on various litigation files in Canada and foreign countries.

 

Today, in his current role, Mr. Rheault is responsible for the company’s relationships with all levels of governments in Canada as well as Air Canada’s community partnership program. He has been involved in many complex regulatory and policy matters.

 

Prior to joining Air Canada, he served as policy advisor at the Office of the Premier of Québec and for the Minister of Economic and Regional Development and Research.

In his role as Head of International, Bill is responsible for BMO Financial Group’s Capital Markets business in EMEA and Asia. Prior to assuming his management role in EMEA in 2011, Bill was Head of Investment and Corporate Banking in London where he was responsible for a wide range of international transactions including M&A, strategic advisory, equity and debt financing.

Paul Towsey

Paul Towsey is a Professional Engineer with over 25 years of experience in the design and management of steelmaking projects globally. From 2015 to 2017, Mr. Towsey relocated with his family to Beijing to manage Hatch’s Metals portfolio in the China/Asia region. During this period, he regularly dealt with Chinese companies (State Owned and Private), the Canadian Trade Commission and international business groups to promote Hatch and Canadian business. He currently sits on the Board of Directors of Hatch’s Joint Venture company Hatch CISDI International and regularly visits Beijing and Chongqing as part of this role.

Mr. Wei is known as a successful entrepreneur who immigrated from China to Canada in 2001. In the same year, he established Canada FengTai Group. Mr. Wei is the chairman and founder of FengTai Group, which owns Foody-Mart Supermarket Chain and Foody World Supermarket Chain, with existing operating space of over 300,000 SF in six stores and two warehouses, with annual revenue over $300 million.

 

The two distribution centres are in Toronto and Vancouver with over 300,000 square feet of warehouse operation area.

 

In addition, Mr. Wei is actively involved in real estate developments. Projects include residential developments with over 130 acres of land under development in the GTA and 4,000 residential units in the construction pipeline. Commercial real estate development projects include developing Shop & Play Lifestyle plazas combining grocery stores, restaurants, and other entertainment & recreation outlets.

 

Furthermore, Mr. Wei is a leader of Chinese Community in Canada. The Late Honourable Paul Desmarais

Biography

Paul Desmarais was one of the first business executives in North America to recognize and support China’s efforts to transform its economy and improve the standard of living of its huge population. Encouraged by the then Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, Mr. Desmarais orchestrated a major trade delegation to China bringing with him fellow CEOs from some of the largest companies in Canada. With vision and energy, he was a driving force behind the creation of the Canada China Business Council (CCBC) in 1978 and he served as its Chairman for the first 15 years. Informed by his sense of public duty, Mr. Desmarais led numerous subsequent trade missions to China and in turn hosted Chinese officials on their reciprocal visits to Canada. Mr. Desmarais’ Power Corporation was one of the first external companies to invest in China and today, some 40 years after his first visit to the country, Power Corporation continues to have significant investments in China where the Desmarais name continues to be warmly regarded by the business and investment communities.

 

Mr. Desmarais acquired control of Power Corporation of Canada in 1968 and remained the Corporation’s controlling shareholder until his death in 2013. He led Power Corporation as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer from 1968 to 1996 and continued to serve as a Director and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Board until 2013. At the time of his death, he was also Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of Pargesa Holding SA and a Director of Power Financial Corporation and Groupe Bruxelles Lambert. Mr. Desmarais was a Member of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada, a Companion of the Order of Canada, an Officer of the National Order of Québec, a Grand’Croix de l’Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur (France) and a Commandeur de l’Ordre de Léopold II (Belgium).

Mr. Desmarais is Deputy Chairman of Power Corporation, a position he has held since 2008. He previously served as President and Co-Chief Executive Officer of Power Corporation from 1996 until his retirement in February 2020. He is also Deputy Chairman of Power Financial, previously having served as Executive Co-Chairman from 2015 until 2020, Co-Chairman from 2008 to 2015 and Deputy Chairman from 1996 to 2008. Prior to joining Power Corporation in 1983, he was Special Assistant to the Minister of Justice of Canada and an institutional investment counsellor at Richardson Greenshields Securities Ltd.

 

He is a director of many Power Corporation group companies, including Power Financial, Great-West Lifeco, Canada Life, Empower, Putnam Investments, IGM Financial, IG Wealth Management, Mackenzie and Power Sustainable Capital. He has been a director of Rockefeller Capital Management General Partner L.L.C. since 2023. He was a director and Vice-Chairman of Pargesa in Europe until November 2020, when Pargesa’s reorganization was completed. He was also a director of Bellus Health Inc. until 2009 and of CITIC Pacific Limited in Asia until 2014.

 

Over the years, cultural, health, and other not-for-profit organizations have benefited from his commitment, involvement, and dedication. He has played key roles in a number of fundraising campaigns, including those of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Montreal Heart Institute, the Montreal General Hospital, Leucan, the Canadian Red Cross, the Canadian Cancer Society, Centraide of Greater Montreal and the Jean Paul Riopelle Foundation.
