Alexis Black is a Business Development Officer with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office. An arts graduate from Western University, Alexis has worked for two national law firms managing technology and intellectual property law marketing and business development portfolios. Prior to working for Canadian law firms, Alexis managed sponsorships and business partnerships for the Greater Kitchener Waterloo Chamber of Commerce.
Bob Guo is the founder and CEO of Goldenmount Capital International Inc. He is a seasoned insightful financial executive, team builder, and business leader with international market development skills and has extensive experience in public and private companies as Board member, executive, and advisor. He currently sits on the Board of a Chinese public issuer, China Anhui Xinke New Materials Co., Ltd. (SHA:600255), and a Canadian public issuer, China Wind Power (TSX-V: CNW); he was a Board member of Environmental Waste International Inc. (TSX-V: EWS). Previously, Bob worked for TD and BMO Nesbitt Burns providing financial and advisory services to corporate and individual investors. He was given the Chinese Business Excellence Award for his expertise and professional services.
Sarah Kutulakos joined the CCBC in 2007 and has since revitalized CCBC’s role as Canada’s premier bilateral trade and investment organization. Sarah has re-centered the Council’s activities around providing business services, catalyzing business growth and activity, and advocating for stronger Sino-Canadian bilateral trade and investment. This has resulted in extensive public outreach activities, internal infrastructure improvements, the launch of new programs such as the Business Incubation Centre, and thriving member relations.
Prior to joining CCBC, Sarah worked for 11 years in marketing, product development, and management with a major multinational corporation, where she had multiple assignments involving China. Sarah managed worldwide product businesses that marketed to China and used China-based sources of supply. She was also involved in several projects requiring cooperation with the Chinese government. Sarah has led both established and start-up businesses within the context of a global corporation and has broad emerging market business experience, and has been involved in the Greater China region since the late 1980’s when she lived and worked in Taiwan. There, she was the first non-Chinese employee of a local high-tech start-up firm, where she gained a deep understanding of Chinese business practices.
A fluent Mandarin speaker, Sarah’s interest in China began at the University of Wisconsin, where she studied Chinese, marketing, and international business. She holds an MBA in finance and operations from the Simon School of Business at the University of Rochester. She frequently speaks on China issues, including marketing, trade, investment, and Canada-China relations.
Simon Mills: Following a transfer from HSBC UK to HSBC Canada, Simon has specialised in supporting international focused businesses to manage potential opportunities and risks that arise from trading globally. Simon has worked in many business focused roles within the financial industry, recently working as a Senior International Relationship Manager with the Vancouver Corporate Banking Team. He also continues to support the British Canadian Business Association actively promoting discussions around the latest trends, challenges and opportunities in the ever changing business environment.
Ladislau Papara has been with Export Development Canada (EDC) for almost 10 years. He is currently the Regional Manager for Asia, responsible for trade identification, development and trade creation in the region. He brings to the role his considerable experience in international trade facilitation and financing as well as his in-depth understanding of EDC’s products and services.
Prior to his current role, Mr. Papara has worked as a Financing Manager for the Extractive and Resources Sector and before that in the Aerospace sector, where he gained valuable insight into Canadian capabilities in these sectors, as well as a good understanding of the Canadian exporter demographic. Mr. Papara’s background in contract negotiations and financial analysis has enabled him to deliver high-quality financial solutions to Canadian exporters in a variety of sectors, including forestry, oil & gas, mining, and transportation.
Mr. Papara holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Simon Fraser University and a Masters in Business Administration from McGill University. His specializations are International Business and Finance. In 2013 he was also awarded a Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) designation, through the global trade program offered by the Forum for International Trade Training (FITT).
Ken Su leads PwC’s Asia-Pacific Deals Initiative with particular focus on China.
Ken has been at PwC advising clients since he joined the firm in 1995. He has recently returned to the Canadian Deals and Consulting team after spending 12 years in PwC’s Shanghai and Beijing offices where he was a founder of PwC’s Outbound Investment Services group which was the first dedicated team of its kind focused on advising Chinese clients on overseas investments. He was also PwC China/Hong Kong’s Mining and Metals leader, Energy & Utilities Deals lead, as well as the North China Multinational Clients Advisory lead and is now the partner leading transactions and deals for PwC Canada’s China Business Network practice.
In the last 21 years, Ken has assisted clients on over 400 transactions involving more than 75 different countries with total deal value over US$ 125 billion. He has extensive experience advising companies regarding strategy, sourcing investment opportunities, due diligence, project management, complex financial analysis, negotiation support, closing/post-closing, divestitures, and restructuring. Ken has significant transaction experience in a number of industries including real estate, mining, energy, agriculture, food, health/wellness, manufacturing, life sciences and financial services and has led many high-profile international deals.
Jonson Sun, Director, COO of GIC, leads the merchant banking initiative in GIC, and screens, selects and executes on the firm’s merchant banking interests.
Prior to this role he was also the founder and former CEO of Ilium Capital Corp., a merchant bank headquartered in Toronto that has businesses in Canada, Israel, and China.
Jonson has a solid network in the investment and M&A space. He also sits on the board of Pishon Innovation Lab, Focus Point Education and the holding company that overseas GIC’s investment in Securities firms.
Victor W. Tsao is Managing Partner of the firm’s Vancouver Office, and a member of the firm’s Business Law Group. Victor is also a registered trademarks agent and a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada.
Victor is fluent in Mandarin Chinese as well as Japanese. He was born and raised in China and later lived and studied in Japan before relocating to Canada.
Prior to beginning his legal career, Victor was a successful entrepreneur who co-founded an information technology consulting firm, a software development company, and a real estate leasing and management business.
Drawing from his years of industry experience, Victor advises a wide variety of Canadian, Chinese and Japanese clients from both sides of the Pacific in business matters as well as intellectual property matters. Victor’s keen senses of business and well rounded appreciation of the North American and Asian culture help direct clients onto the right path in their business dealings.
Victor has strong ties to and has built a large business network in both China and Japan, and possesses insightful appreciation of the business cultures of both countries.
In his spare time, Victor was a columnist writing for North America’s largest circulating Chinese language newspaper, the World Journal, discussing various legal issues faced by Chinese immigrants in their personal and business lives.
Victor is the President of Canada China Sports Foundation; he sits on the board of Canada China Enterprises Association; he is also a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board at Simon Fraser University, Faculty of Communications, Arts, and Technology. Victor is also an advisory board member of Canada China Business Council, and sits on the Scholarship and Burseries Committee at Crofton House School, one of British Columbia’s oldest and most respected independent schools.
