David Carbonaro is the CEO of GIC. He is also a senior lawyer who practiced securities, corporate finance, mining and international law. He has been instrumental in heading up strategic initiatives for Canadian clients in China and the Middle East and uses his legal and business expertise to assisting Canadian companies in accessing the tremendous opportunities available in these emerging markets. Mr. Carbonaro was appointed as special counsel to the Toronto Stock Exchange for the purposes of presenting the opportunities on the TSX to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia investment community at Tadawul in Riyadh(the Saudi Stock Exchange). He has extensive experience in international business and has advised companies doing business in Africa, Asia, and the Middle-East and North America.
Marti Anne Falcone has been with Export Development Canada (EDC) over 20 years. She is currently the Regional Manager for Asia, responsible for trade identification, development and creation in the region. She brings to the role her considerable experience in international trade facilitation, insurance and business development as well as her in-depth understanding of EDC’s products and services.
Prior to her current role, Ms. Falcone worked with the Resources, Credits Insurance team as an Underwriter, where she managed the agricultural equipment and forestry portfolios. Her previous roles include: Credit Analyst; Recovery Services Manager; and Underwriter – Contracts and Bonding, where she gained invaluable insight into client’s varied exporting requirements.
Ms. Falcone’s background in contract negotiations, debt restructurings and financial analysis has enabled her to deliver high-quality financial solutions to Canadian exporters in a variety of sectors, including agricultural equipment, forestry, infrastructure, transportation and oil and gas.
Dr. Stephen E Jones joined 4Deep Inwater Imaging in April of 2012 as their VP of Business Development and Marketing and then became the CEO in January of 2013. In 2015 Stephen was a finalist for the EY Emerging Entrepreneur in Atlantic Canada and in that same year, 4Deep was the only company from Atlantic Canada to make Deloitte’s Companies to Watch list in Canada. Stephen brings a vast array of International business development experience, with particular emphasis on China, to 4Deep along with unsurpassed devotion and passion to make the company a global success. He lives with his wife and son in Seabright, Nova Scotia. Stephen holds a Ph.D. in physiology and biophysics from Dalhousie University and an EMBA from St. Mary’s Sobeys School of Business.
Cecile Klein started her career as a Federal Public Servant 1981, and has worked as a Business Development Officer with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) from 1996-2016; half her career has been in the area of IP. Her role is to educate businesses, inventors, students, educators on all the areas of intellectual property, i.e. Trade Secrets, Patents, Trade-marks, Copyrights and Industrial Designs along with their related treaties and conventions. Also, to explain IP’s strategic value to increase stakeholder’s awareness, enabling them to make informed decisions.
She is part of the CIPO/IPIC Bank of Speakers initiative; this is an initiative where anyone can request a speaker to deliver an IP presentation. She is also part of the CIPO IP Case studies discussion leader group. She is trained to lead, and stimulate, class discussions in the area of IP.
Sarah Kutulakos joined the CCBC in 2007 and has since revitalized CCBC’s role as Canada’s premier bilateral trade and investment organization. Sarah has re-centered the Council’s activities around providing business services, catalyzing business growth and activity, and advocating for stronger Sino-Canadian bilateral trade and investment. This has resulted in extensive public outreach activities, internal infrastructure improvements, the launch of new programs such as the Business Incubation Centre, and thriving member relations.
Prior to joining CCBC, Sarah worked for 11 years in marketing, product development, and management with a major multinational corporation, where she had multiple assignments involving China. Sarah managed worldwide product businesses that marketed to China and used China-based sources of supply. She was also involved in several projects requiring cooperation with the Chinese government. Sarah has led both established and start-up businesses within the context of a global corporation and has broad emerging market business experience, and has been involved in the Greater China region since the late 1980’s when she lived and worked in Taiwan. There, she was the first non-Chinese employee of a local high-tech start-up firm, where she gained a deep understanding of Chinese business practices.
A fluent Mandarin speaker, Sarah’s interest in China began at the University of Wisconsin, where she studied Chinese, marketing, and international business. She holds an MBA in finance and operations from the Simon School of Business at the University of Rochester. She frequently speaks on China issues, including marketing, trade, investment, and Canada-China relations.
Mélanie Lapointe has been with HSBC Bank Canada for the last 4 years and was previously with another domestic bank for 16 years. Both positions were in Trade and FX deal Strategy. She supports the commercial teams in Quebec and the Maritimes; working with more than 15 relationship managers supporting medium and large size companies structure transactions to help them to grow their international market share and improve their working capital. Melanie helps companies mitigate the risks, leverage their business
and help use different financial tools to support their short term
transactions.
