Live in Beijing: An Olympic-Sized Opportunity – The Business of the Games
In just over three months, athletes from around the world will converge on Beijing for the 2022 Winter Olympics, the first time that China has hosted the event. Beijing guests tuned into a panel discussion with two recognized Canadian executives in China who are deeply involved in different aspects of the Games (including e-commerce, sporting goods, alpine sports, facilities & training) for a discussion of what to expect in Beijing for these historic Games, and how companies are taking advantage of this generational explosion of interest in winter sports in China. The panel was live in Beijing, and the recording was shown online in Canada followed by on-the-fly Q&A with several Canada-based experts.

Live in Beijing: Sustainable Investing in China in Times of Change – Two Perspectives
With China’s 2030 peak carbon emission and 2060 carbon neutrality goals pledged by President Xi in 2020, sustainable investment is gaining ever greater traction in China. Recent developments such as the national carbon emissions trading platform demonstrate the policy frameworks that both government and financial institutions are working within as China’s green finance structure develops. ESG investment will also support a greener economic recovery as the economy continues to emerge from the hangover of the pandemic. In parallel, various ESG related financial products have since emerged and can seem difficult to navigate. What does this greater increased focus on sustainable finance mean for foreign investors wanting to take part? How much influence is ESG investing truly driving in the strategic plans of CIOs? What are some future prospects for ESG investment in China for Canadian firms?

PERSPECTIVE 1: The Investors – Finance and Capital Markets

  • How can Canadian firms work with Chinese stakeholders to take advantage of climate opportunities?
  • Shifts in portfolio balancing – importance of heavily weighing ESG, SRI considerations in allocating funds vs traditional winners?
  • Green finance, green bonds – what are the opportunities?
  • Keys to analyzing a sustainable investment – standardized ESG disclosures, responsible supply chains, financial transparency and more.

PERSPECTIVE 2: The Investments – Infrastructure, Energy and the Environment

  • Where are the key areas of opportunity for Canada and China to co-invest? Water, soil remediation, solar, wind, geothermal, and beyond
  • Buildings and materials – certifications, emissions, new alternatives?
  • NEVs – what is the time horizon of fossil fuel burning vehicles in China?
  • Risks of overcorrecting – is there such thing as too much focus on ESG?
