Overview

The Canada China Business Council (CCBC) invites applications for short-term research and knowledge mobilization grants aimed at enhancing public understanding of Canada–China economic relations. These grants support focused projects that build China competency in Canada, promote evidence-based discussion, and help advance Canada’s economic interests and diversification priorities.

Projects should address one or more of the following themes:

  • Canada–China trade, investment, and economic relations
  • China’s economic outlook under the 15th Five-Year Plan
  • Emerging opportunities for Canadian businesses in China
  • Pathways for diversification through strategic and informed engagement

All funded work must produce high-quality, publicly accessible outputs of value to policymakers, businesses, academics, and the broader public.

Application Timeline

Applications are accepted until end of April 2026.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants include:

  • Academics and university-based researchers
  • Think tank and policy practitioners
  • Independent analysts with relevant expertise

Collaborative projects are welcome. While graduate students may contribute to the projects and can be supported through the grant, the principal applicant must be a faculty member or a senior researcher responsible for overseeing and completing the project.

Projects with additional external funding are preferred, as co-funding enhances feasibility, scale, and impact.

Grant Scope and Funding Conditions

Maximum grant: $25,000 CAD
Disbursement: Provided upon successful completion of all deliverables
Project completion deadline: End of Dec 2026

Partial Funding

CCBC may award less than the requested amount.
Proposals must clearly explain:

  • How the project will be completed if partial funding is provided
  • What additional resources or institutional support are available
  • Which components will proceed under reduced funding

This plan is required for proposal consideration.

Advance Payment Option

Successful applicants may request an advance payment of up to 50 percent of the awarded grant.

Deliverables

Each funded project must produce at least two public-facing outputs, such as:

  • Research and policy papers
  • Analytical briefs or visual explainers
  • Conference sessions, roundtables, workshops and webinars
  • Public articles, commentaries, or other accessible knowledge products

Deliverables must be:

  • Published on an independent public platform, and
  • Eligible for publication or re-publication by CCBC with proper attribution

Proposal Requirements (Max. 3 Pages)

Proposals must include:

  1. Project Description
    • Topic overview and relevance to Canada–China economic relations
  2. Objectives and Expected Contributions
    • Clear goals and value for public and policy audiences
  3. Workplan and Timeline
    • Major activities, milestones, and delivery dates
  4. Budget & Partial-Funding Plan
    • Requested budget with detailed breakdown
    • Explanation of how work will proceed with a smaller grant
    • Description of any existing or pending external funding
  5. Researcher Information
    • Short bio and CV (of the applicant/research team)

Expectations for Grant Recipients

Recipients are expected to:

  • Complete all deliverables as proposed
  • Participate in a CCBC event to present research results and outcomes
  • Provide a brief final report summarizing deliverables, impact of the grant, and a final expense outline

Review Criteria

Proposals will be assessed on:

  • Relevance to program themes and alignment with Canada’s economic interests
  • Clarity, rigor, and feasibility of methodology
  • Feasibility and realism of the proposed budget
  • Quality and usefulness of expected outputs
  • Strength and viability of the timeline
  • Researcher(s) expertise and track record
  • Presence of additional external funding or institutional support
