The Canada China Business Council (CCBC) was pleased to host a high-level panel discussion on the current state of Canada–China economic relations, examining the challenges, opportunities, and practical pathways for constructive engagement. Held in Ottawa, on December 3, 2025, at the Senate of Canada Building and hosted by the Canada–China Legislative Association, the session—co-chaired by MP Zoe Royer and Senator Clément Gignac—brought together Canadian parliamentarians, Minister Counselor Xu, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Canada, and a visiting delegation of Chinese parliamentarians for an informed and substantive exchange.

The program provided policymakers with actionable insights from distinguished business leaders, former senior officials, and subject-matter experts with deep experience navigating Canada–China trade and investment ties. Panelists explored how businesses in both countries are adapting to current economic conditions, where new commercial opportunities are emerging, and how policymakers can help foster an environment that strengthens Canadian competitiveness and supports long-term economic interests. The discussion highlighted the importance of sustained engagement as both governments work to recalibrate and stabilize bilateral economic relations.

Opening remarks were delivered by Senator Clément Gignac. The panel featured Hon. Martin Cauchon, Counsel, DS Lawyers Canada LLP; Dr. DENG Jun, President & CEO of Bank of China (Canada); Joyce Lee, Partner and Chair of the Asia Group at McCarthy Tétrault LLP; and Graham Shantz, President of the Canada China Business Council. The session was moderated by Bijan Ahmadi, CCBC’s Executive Director & COO, and concluded with remarks from MP Zoe Royer.
