The evening began with remarks from Erin Griffiths, Senior Vice President, Client Solutions, Scotiabank, followed by an insightful presentation by Rebekah Young, Vice President, Economics, Scotiabank. Ms. Young provided an analysis of the global economic outlook for 2025 and beyond, highlighting key trends in international trade and the investment landscape. She noted that while inflation is beginning to normalize, its lingering effects on prices and consumer sentiment remain a challenge. Labour markets continue to show resilience, while financial markets cautiously anticipate moderate economic growth. Ms. Young also addressed risks stemming from geopolitical tensions, tariffs, and fluctuating interest rates, emphasizing the need for businesses to remain adaptable and well-informed in a rapidly changing economic environment.
Mr. LUO Weidong, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Toronto, shared insights on China’s economic priorities for 2025, highlighting its role as a key driver of global growth and expressing hope that both nations would use wisdom to build cooperation.
The occasion also marked a significant leadership transition for CCBC, as the Toronto business community bid farewell to Sarah Kutulakos, who served as Executive Director and COO for nearly 18 years, and warmly welcomed her successor, Bijan Ahmadi. CCBC President Graham Shantz spoke about Ms. Kutulakos’s contributions and expressed confidence in the Council’s future under Mr. Ahmadi’s leadership. In her reflections, Ms. Kutulakos recounted key milestones that have shaped Canada-China relations, including high-level trade missions, ministerial visits, and pivotal agreements. Strong economic ties with China are essential for Canada’s continued growth in an increasingly competitive global market. Mr. Ahmadi noted that approximately two-thirds of Canada’s GDP is trade-related. Therefore, fostering a productive and pragmatic relationship with China, along with strengthening economic and trade activities between the two countries, supports Canada’s national interests and contributes to its prosperity.
The presentation hour concluded with exciting Lunar New Year lucky draws, adding a festive touch to the evening. CCBC extends its gratitude to Lucky Draw Sponsors: Canada Royal Milk, China Eastern Airlines, Laneway Distillers, and Midea.
Closing remarks were delivered by Gautam Mohorikar, Director, Partnerships, Scotiabank, who thanked attendees and reaffirmed the importance of the growing Canada-China business relationship.
CCBC thanks Scotia Wealth Management for sponsoring the Lunar New Year Reception.
