On January 17, 2025, CCBC, in collaboration with the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business (CKGSB) and the China-Britain Business Council (CBBC), hosted an insightful event in Beijing on China’s 2025 economic outlook, focusing on strategies to navigate uncertainty. The event brought together experts to share perspectives on economic challenges, opportunities, and the potential implications of the upcoming Trump presidency.

Key takeaways included China’s 9% increase in new multinational corporation (MNC) registrations last year, signaling a business-driven approach despite ongoing geopolitical tensions. While lower consumption continues to pressure margins for goods and services, optimism remains regarding larger margins as signs of economic recovery emerge, with sales growth seen in specific categories.

Participants highlighted the importance of targeting market niches, leveraging existing consumer bases, and staying flexible to adapt to multiple scenarios. Furthermore, maintaining consistent, commercially driven communication with headquarters was emphasized as a critical strategy for MNCs operating in China.

Thank you to our esteemed moderator Tom Simpson, and panelists LIU Jing, Professor of Accounting and Finance and Director of the Investment Research Center at CKGSB; Albert Yu, Vice-Chairman Asia at BMO; ZENG Yuan, Senior Economist at KPMG China Macroeconomic Research Institute; and Liam Mather, Head of Public Affairs at WPIC Marketing + Technologies, for their insights and contributions to the discussion.
