On January 10, 2024, CCBC members had the chance to engage with Jean-Christian Brillant, Minister (Commercial), from the Embassy of Canada in China. Many topics were discussed, including the state of the Canada-China relations, the Indo-Pacific Strategy, opportunities and challenges for Canadian companies in the China market, and Canada’s regime for attracting foreign investment. The conversation was positive and forward-looking, as many sectors of the Canadian economy were represented, including entertainment, finance, manufacturing, logistics, transportation and more.

Jean-Christian emphasized the importance of Canadian companies continuing to proactively engage in China in a way that allows them to seize opportunities while managing the risks associated with this complex market. Despite a continued challenging situation bilaterally, trade numbers between the two countries remain strong, and China, with its large consumer market, presents significant growth opportunities.

During the discussion, questions were raised on the economic situation in China and challenges ahead for Canadian companies. Jean-Christian emphasized the need for a pragmatic approach as China’s prominence on the global stage will undoubtedly continue to increase. The discussion was followed by a cocktail session.
