CCBC 2022 China-Ready Virtual Mission for
Indigenous Business Leaders

Building capacity to create and assess partnerships with Chinese investors

October – November 2022

The CCBC 2022 China-Ready Virtual Mission for Indigenous Business Leaders has been developed for representatives of First Nations, Inuit and Métis businesses, development corporations and business organizations; hereafter referred to as Indigenous business leaders.

As Indigenous businesses, development corporations and business organizations pursue growth and build infrastructure, both the China market and Chinese investors pose unique opportunities. This CCBC program is designed to equip Indigenous business leaders and their organizations with the tools they need to build mutually beneficial partnerships with Chinese companies and investors. A CCBC-Dentons Canada report from March 2022 describes in detail the opportunities and challenges for such partnerships, many of which this mission directly addresses.

The objective of this Mission is to share and discuss opportunities, challenges, and best practices in bilateral business, and to build meaningful connections for business development.

Program Highlights:

  • Two-day virtual mission program designed to promote mutual understanding between Indigenous and Chinese business communities.
  • Comprehensive pre-mission China-ready training for delegates, including modules on: Chinese Business Culture, China Market Overview, Negotiation and Partnership Building, Managing Legal Issues and Financial Structures, and Marketing Your Project to the China market.
  • Build and/or update your China-facing pitch with dedicated CCBC support.

Sam Gao
President
AKSO Marine Biotech Inc.& Atlantic Sea Cucumber Ltd.

Biography

Sam Gao is the owner of AKSO Marine Biotech Inc., based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. AKSO was established in 1983 as a sea cucumber processor, and has been focused on research and products development using Atlantic sea cucumber in recent years. AKSO is named after the Greek goddess of health Ακεσο, who has superb healing powers, which is in line with the functions of sea cucumber.

AKSO’s award-winning product NOVA SEA ATLANTIC® Sea Cucumber Capsules has been approved to boost the body’s immune functions by National Research Council of Canada. AKSO is investing in new research and development activities with local scientific partnerships including National Research Council of Canada, local universities and innovation centres. Since 2018, AKSO has been awarded over $2.8 million Canadian dollars from Federal and Provincial governments.

Sea cucumber is also called Ginseng of the Sea. In Asian countries such as China, sea cucumbers have been consumed as tonic food and traditional medicines for centuries due to their rich bioactive compounds, for example, saponins and polysaccharides, with health benefits against various diseases including cancer, inflammation, and virus infection. Chinese culture has similar values as Indigenous culture. Sam is from China, so he understands, respects, and admires the long history and culture of the First Nations. Sam hopes to take advantage of the essence of traditional culture and use modern technology to carry over the excellence of the traditional Indigenous culture. For example, this year AKSO launched a new product made from Atlantic sea cucumber and local cranberry. Both ingredients are considered natural antibiotics in Chinese and Indigenous culture, respectively. This is a great example of AKSO having the ability and capacity to develop ancient medicine with modern technology. This is the reason for AKSO’s great success in e-commerce in China and North America.

Now the Chinese market is beginning to recognize the history and value of Indigenous harvested products. It is a huge opportunity to further educate the Chinese market on Indigenous culture and beliefs. There is also potential for tourism driving Chinese visitors to local communities. It would be good to have more events like this to connect with Indigenous groups. For AKSO to partner with an Indigenous group, we would need to identify one that meets the regulatory requirements needed to ship to China and meet our customer requirements. Our focus is also on having a consistent supply of products and we would be interested in an exclusive agreement to get one. We expect to build the respectful and reciprocal relationships with the Indigenous people.

FROM OUR PAST MISSION DELEGATES

“My biggest takeaway was the connections that are leading me to my next best steps. Small businesses have to enter China in a very different way than larger companies. I am confident I have now found the best way to try that makes sense for my business in its current stage. I have successfully filed IP protection, know my next steps, and have so many new resources – especially the Trade Commissioners. I never knew this department existed and they have been a wonderful resource for me.”

Alison Brett, CEO and Founder, Clasp Magic Inc.

“Was a really good experience and would encourage others to join.”

Ryan Knight, CEO, Detailing Knights Canada Inc.

My biggest takeaway: So many people with inspirational stories, [I got a] better understanding of what Trade Commissioners can do.”

Lory Wang, CEO and Founder, Arctica Food Group Canada Inc.

“Biggest takeaway: Learning all the small details and nuances in dealing with China but also networking was invaluable. It is difficult to pull such an important business opportunity virtually…Nonetheless the CCBC did a good job providing top presenters and presentations that zeroed in on relevant topics for the benefit of the mission delegates.”
