U.S.-China Phase I Trade Deal – Its Impact on Canadian Business with China

China and the United States signed a “Phase One” Economic and Trade Agreement in January. The agreement covers a number of issues that impact Canadian businesses and includes a clause where China has committed to purchases of US goods and services.

 

At a CCBC breakfast session in Toronto on Wednesday, March 11, 2020, an American expert on international trade and foreign investment, Mr. Jason Waite, Partner of Alston & Bird was in Toronto from Washington D.C. to discuss “The US-China Trade War, Phase 1 Agreement, and Outlook for the Bilateral Relationship in this Election Year”.

 

Mr. Brian Kingston, Vice President of Business Council of Canada, also provided an in-depth overview of impact this deal has on Canadian business with China.

 

After their presentations, Mr. Stephen Pike, Partner, Gowling WLG, joined them for a lively panel discussion moderated by Ms. Sarah Kutulakos, Executive Director of CCBC, where attendees were invited to participate in a Q&A. The event concluded with closing remarks from Mr. Thomas J. Timmins, Leader-China Initiative, Gowling WLG.
