The Canada China Business Council (CCBC) welcomes the\u00a0joint statement<\/a>\u00a0issued by Canada\u2019s First Ministers, and we strongly support the commitment to advance trade diversification and re-engage with key global markets\u2014including China, Canada\u2019s second-largest trading partner.<\/div>\n

As the national voice of the Canada-China business community, CCBC is encouraged by the Prime Minister and Premiers\u2019 recognition of the importance of regular high-level government-to-government engagement with China to strengthen the overall trade relationship. We stand ready to support federal and provincial governments in their efforts to resolve existing trade barriers\u2014particularly the removal of Chinese counter-tariffs on Canadian agricultural and seafood products\u2014and to expand market access and create new opportunities for Canadian businesses.<\/div>\n

For nearly five decades, CCBC has worked to promote prosperity for Canadians by facilitating two-way trade and investment with China. Today, Canadian exports to China support hundreds of thousands of jobs across the country. The current moment calls for pragmatic action to ensure that Canadian companies can succeed in an increasingly competitive global marketplace.<\/div>\n
In recent months, CCBC has led a cross-country consultation process with our members, partners, and industry stakeholders to shape a forward-looking approach to Canada-China business relations. Through these dialogues, we have identified four\u00a0recommendations for government consideration:<\/div>\n

    Recalibrate Canada\u2019s China policy within the Indo-Pacific Strategy, ensuring a pragmatic approach.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n

    Develop a nuanced investment policy that attracts beneficial Chinese investments while safeguarding Canada\u2019s national interests.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n

    Facilitate and invest in Canadian exporters\u2019 business development efforts in China.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
    As Canada advances major economic initiatives and infrastructure investments\u2014including enhanced trade corridors and expanded export capacity\u2014China remains a vital market for Canadian agri-food, energy, natural resources, education, financial services, manufacturing, and other key sectors.\u00a0Meaningful engagement with China will be essential to the success of any national trade diversification strategy.<\/div>\n
