He has lived and worked for over 12 years in Asia\, half of that in China. In Ottawa\, Mr. Shantz has worked in senior management positions in Global Affairs Canada\, the Department of Finance and the Privy Council Office. In 2000-2001 he served as Canada’s lead negotiator for Foreign Investment Protection Agreements (FIPAs) and in 1996-1997 served as deputy chief negotiator for the Canadian team during China’s WTO accession talks. Over the past decades\, Mr. Shantz has been involved in numerous major bilateral visits between Canadian and Chinese leaders. \nMr. Shantz has served on the Board of Directors of the Asia Pacific Foundation (2013-2016) and on the Board of Directors of the Centre for International Governance Innovation (2006-2009). He served as Canada’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain (2009-2012) and ended his career in the public service in senior management positions in Global Affairs Canada’s Asia Branch. \nA Mandarin speaker\, Mr. Shantz pursued his interest in China while studying economics at Goshen College in Indiana. He holds an M.A. in International Affairs from Carleton University’s Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. He also pursued language and economics studies in China\, including at Beijing University and Xiamen University\, under the Canada-China Scholars’ Exchange Program. \n \nBijan Ahmadi\nExecutive Director and COO\nCanada China Business Council \nBijan Ahmadi serves as the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the Canada China Business Council (CCBC)\, overseeing the operations and activities of the Council across its seven chapters in Canada and China. \nBefore joining CCBC\, he co-founded and served as the Executive Director of the Institute for Peace & Diplomacy (IPD) from 2018 to 2024. IPD is a non-partisan think tank operating in Canada and the United States\, dedicated to fostering constructive engagement and interest-based thinking in international affairs. \nDuring his tenure at IPD\, Mr. Ahmadi launched the organization’s Asia research program in 2020 and its flagship annual conference\, the Indo-Pacific Strategy Forum (IPSF)\, in Ottawa in 2021. Today\, IPSF is recognized as Canada’s premier conference on the country’s engagement in the Indo-Pacific region. He was also the co-editor of Canada-China Brief\, a biweekly policy newsletter providing the latest developments and expert insights on political and economic relations between Ottawa and Beijing. \nIn his work on China\, Mr. Ahmadi has advised large corporations and SMEs on navigating Canada-China trade\, policy\, and regulatory developments. Before founding IPD\, Mr. Ahmadi worked in strategy and management roles in the financial services and real estate sectors\, where he honed his skills in organizational leadership and operational planning. He also served on the executive boards of several Canadian non-profits and NGOs\, including the Toronto branch of the Canadian International Council. \n \nSarah Kutulakos\nFormer Executive Director and COO\nCanada China Business Council \nSarah Kutulakos joined the CCBC in 2007 and revitalized CCBC’s role as Canada’s premier bilateral trade and investment organization. During her tenure\, Ms. Kutulakos re-centered the Council’s activities around providing business services\, catalyzing business growth and activity\, and advocating for stronger Sino-Canadian bilateral trade and investment. This has resulted in extensive public outreach activities\, internal infrastructure improvements\, the launch of new programs such as the Business Incubation Centre\, and thriving member relations. \nPrior to joining CCBC\, Ms. Kutulakos worked for 11 years in marketing\, product development\, and management with a major multinational corporation\, where she had multiple assignments involving China. Ms. Kutulakos managed worldwide product businesses that marketed to China and used China-based sources of supply. She was also involved in several projects requiring cooperation with the Chinese government. Ms. Kutulakos has led both established and start-up businesses within the context of a global corporation and has broad emerging market business experience\, and has been involved in the Greater China region since the late 1980s when she lived and worked in Taiwan. There\, she was the first non-Chinese employee of a local high-tech start-up firm\, where she gained a deep understanding of Chinese business practices. \nA fluent Mandarin speaker\, Ms. Kutulakos’s interest in China began at the University of Wisconsin\, where she studied Chinese\, marketing\, and international business. She holds an MBA in finance and operations from the Simon School of Business at the University of Rochester. She frequently speaks on China issues\, including marketing\, trade\, investment\, and Canada-China relations. \n \nJeff Zhang\nRegional Director\, Central Canada\nCanada China Business Council \nJeff Zhang has over 30 years of international experience in private\, public and non-profit organizations in a variety of sectors including E-commerce\, oil and gas\, retail\, commercial real estate\, education and financial services. Prior to joining the Canada China Business Council\, Mr. Zhang worked in establishment and operation management at a Sino-Foreign joint venture company and in strategic partnership management at a Fortune 500 multinational company. E \nMr. Jean Chrétien was born in Shawinigan\, Québec\, Canada. Mr. Chrétien completed his law studies at Université Laval and was admitted to the Québec Bar in 1958. He is also a member of the Ontario Bar. \nMr. Chrétien was elected Member of the House of Commons in 1963. During his career\, he also served as Deputy Prime Minister\, Minister of Finance\, Minister of Industry\, Trade and Commerce\, Minister of Foreign Affairs\, Minister of Justice and Attorney General\, Minister of National Revenue\, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development\, President of the Treasury Board\, Minister of Energy\, Mines and Resources\, Minister responsible for Francophone Affairs and Minister in charge of Social Development. \nMr. Chrétien was sworn in as Canada’s 20th Prime Minister of Canada in November 1993 after winning a majority of the seats in the House of Commons. Joli-Coeur a agi comme conseiller de confiance auprès de grandes entreprises canadiennes et internationales issues de divers secteurs\, et a participé à certains des plus importants financements de marchés des capitaux et d’infrastructures. Dernièrement\, M. Joli-Coeur a dirigé l’équipe derrière l’émission inaugurale d’obligations panda d’un montant de 3\,5 milliards de renminbis en République populaire de Chine\, réalisée avec succès par la Banque Nationale du Canada. Il s’agissait de la première émission de ce type pour une banque nord-américaine. \nEn plus de ses activités professionnelles\, M. Joli-Coeur est également très actif dans sa collectivité. Joli-Coeur est titulaire d’une maîtrise en administration des affaires de l’Université Paris-Dauphine\, en France. \n \nL’honorable Martin Cauchon\nAvocat-conseil\nDS Avocats S.E.N.C.R.L\, s.r.l\nVice-président du conseil d’administration\nConseil d’affaires Canada-Chine\n \nAvant de se joindre à DS Avocats S.E.N.C.R.L.\, Martin Cauchon a connu une carrière remarquable. Élu député fédéral pour la première fois en octobre 1993\, il a occupé de nombreux postes au sein du gouvernement de Canada. Il fut notamment secrétaire d’État (Agence de développement économique du Canada pour les régions du Québec)\, ministre du Revenu national ainsi que ministre de la Justice et procureur général du Canada. En 2013\, il a été candidat officiel lors de la course à la direction du Parti Libéral du Canada. De 2015 à 2019\, il a aussi été actionnaire et président exécutif de Groupe Capitales Médias\, ce qui lui a permis de mieux comprendre les défis que doit surmonter la presse écrite dans l’univers numérique. \nL’expérience unique de M. Cauchon auprès du gouvernement et du secteur privé lui a donné une connaissance approfondie sur une grande variété d’enjeux. Au sein de l’équipe de DS Avocats\, il avise les sociétés sur les nombreux défis posés par l’économie du savoir et la mondialisation des marchés\, en tenant compte des facteurs géopolitiques. M. Cauchon facilite également la création de partenariats à l’échelle provinciale\, nationale et internationale. \nAyant établi des relations avec plusieurs interlocuteurs en Chine\, M. Cauchon a acquis une solide connaissance de ce marché\, ce qui lui permet d’intervenir dans des projets qui s’inscrivent dans le cadre de la relation Canada-Chine. \nAprès avoir obtenu une licence en droit à l’Université d’Ottawa\, M. Cauchon est devenu avocat membre du Barreau du Québec en 1985 et a complété en 1991\, une maîtrise en droit des affaires internationales à l’Université d’Exeter\, en Angleterre. Il a été récipiendaire en 2004 de l’International Role Model Award remis par le Equality Forum. En 2015\, il a reçu la distinction honorifique « Advocatus emeritus » et « Le Mérite » du Barreau du Québec. Il est également vice-président du conseil d’administration du Conseil d’affaires Canada-Chine et président de la section du Québec. Il siège au conseil d’administration de plusieurs sociétés. \n \nBijan Ahmadi\nDirecteur exécutif et chef des opérations\nConseil d’affaires Canada-Chine \nBijan Ahmadi occupe le poste de directeur exécutif et CDO du Conseil d’affaires Canada-Chine (CCBC)\, où il supervise les opérations et les activités du Conseil dans ses sept bureaux\, tant au Canada qu’en Chine. \nAvant de rejoindre le CCBC\, M. Ahmadi a cofondé et occupé le poste de directeur exécutif de l’Institut pour la paix et la diplomatie (IPD) de 2018 à 2024. L’IPD est un groupe de réflexion non partisan qui opère au Canada et aux États-Unis\, visant à promouvoir un engagement constructif et une réflexion fondée sur les intérêts dans les affaires internationales. \nPendant son mandat à l’IPD\, M. Il a également été le coéditeur du Canada-China Brief\, une lettre d’information bimensuelle offrant des analyses expertes ainsi que les derniers développements sur les relations politiques et économiques entre Ottawa et Beijing. \nDans le cadre de ses travaux sur la Chine\, M. Ahmadi a conseillé de grandes entreprises et des PME concernant les enjeux liés au commerce\, aux politiques et à l’évolution réglementaires entre le Canada et la Chine. Il a également dirigé la publication de nombreux rapports de recherche sur la Chine et les relations sino-canadiennes\, tout en pilotant des initiatives de diplomatie parallèle en collaboration avec des instituts de recherche chinois et américains. \nM. Ahmadi est titulaire d’une maîtrise en diplomatie mondiale de la SOAS University of London et d’une maîtrise en sciences appliquées de l’Université de Toronto. Avant de co-fonder l’IPD\, il a occupé des postes stratégiques et de gestion dans les secteurs des services financiers et de l’immobilier\, où il a développé ses compétences en leadership organisationnel et en planification opérationnelle. Il a également siégé aux conseils exécutifs de plusieurs organisations à but non lucratif et ONG canadiennes\, dont la section torontoise du Conseil international canadien. \n \nSarah Kutulakos\nL’ancienne directrice exécutive et cheffe des opérations \nConseil d’affaires Canada-Chine \nSarah Kutulakos a rejoint le Conseil en 2007 et a depuis revitalisé le rôle du CCBC en tant que principal organisme au Canada dédié au commerce et à l’investissement bilatéral Chine-Canada. Mme Kutulakos a recentré les activités du Conseil sur l’offre de services d’affaires\, la croissance et l’activité des entreprises\, et sur le renforcement du commerce et de l’investissement bilatéral sino-canadien. Ce travail a abouti à de nombreuses activités de sensibilisation publique\, à l’amélioration des infrastructures internes\, au lancement de nouveaux programmes tels que le Centre d’Incubation d’Entreprises\, et à des relations florissantes avec les membres. \nAvant de rejoindre le CCBC\, Mme Kutulakos a travaillé pendant onze ans dans le marketing\, le développement de produits et la gestion d’une importante multinationale\, où elle avait des tâches multiples impliquant la Chine. Mme Kutulakos a géré des entreprises mondiales de production commercialisant leurs produits en Chine et utilisant des sources d’approvisionnement basées dans ce pays. Elle a également été impliquée dans plusieurs projets nécessitant la coopération avec le gouvernement chinois. Mme Kutulakos a dirigé à la fois des entreprises établies et des entreprises en démarrage\, et jouit d’une vaste expérience des affaires dans les marchés émergents. Elle s’investit dans la grande région de Chine depuis la fin des années 1980\, alors qu’elle vivait et travaillait à Taïwan. À cette époque\, elle a été la première employée non chinoise d’une entreprise émergente locale de haute technologie\, où elle a acquis une profonde compréhension des pratiques commerciales chinoises. \nMme Kutulakos parle couramment le mandarin et son intérêt pour la Chine s’est développé à l’Université du Wisconsin\, où elle a étudié le chinois\, le marketing et les affaires internationales.
